Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key events preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
