Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
